Just finished a humorous and thought-provoking book I received for Christmas this year...
The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible
It was written in something of a journal format, following the author's experiences throughout the year. The author is a self-described agnostic, secular Jew. He spent the first eight months focused on the Old Testament and the last four months focused on the New Testament, with lots of interesting experiences and insights along the way (a visit to the Creation museum, snake handlers in the south, Jerry Falwell's church, a trip to Israel, a cult-leader uncle, discussions with religious leaders and experts from various faiths and walks of life, etc.).
If you have any interest in faith, spiritual exploration, etc., I'd recommend it. Something I hadn't thought about quite so clearly, is that it is a very tiny segment of the population (e.g. not mainline Judaism or Christianity) that attempts to take every portion of the Bible literally.

I heard of that book and saw the author being interviewed awhile back. Looks really good. Just finished Pillars of the Earth. It's an Oprah book club, but I didn't know it at the time. Very well done.
