Not digging DST

Call us backward Hoosiers if you will, but we are not fans of our state's recent switch to observation of daylight saving time. I'd like to think it's good old fashioned common sense that allows us to realize congressional fiddling with the numbers on a machine has nothing to do with the sun's rising and setting or the personal will required to get the appropriate amount of sleep or get up in the morning.

Okay, we're extra annoyed because it's been tough enough trying to establish a sleep/nap schedule with a four-month old, without having to try to make her understand she needs to shift this an hour now (even though she is a baby genius, there are limits here!)

Thanks to the wonders of Wikipedia, at least we now have a target for the source of our annoyance - William Willett. I always suspected it didn't have much to do with energy savings...

"In 1905, the prominent English builder and outdoorsman William Willett was inspired to invent DST during one of his pre-breakfast horseback rides, when he observed with dismay how many Londoners slept through the best part of a summer day. An avid golfer, he also disliked cutting short his round at dusk. His solution was to advance the clock during the summer months, a proposal he published two years later."

I completely agree!! One of the perks to moving back to Indiana should be Indiana time zone!

One of the primary reasons for the governments decision to change the regular time shifts (on both ends) was because it was going to save energy and all the money spent on it. They projected there to be a huge savings. Turns out it saved nothing and in fact more businesses spent money instead of realizing a savings.
Apparently they didn't realize that all it did was shift the energy usage from evening to mornings. Secondly they didn't estimate all the money businesses would end up spending on software to patch all their network systems, which were preprogramed for the time change. I know at our hotel, and through out our company, it caused huge problems trying to get the time clocks to sync with the rest of the network.
